AMURT Provides Emergency Relief After Floods and Landslides in Nepal

At the end of August 2026, flash floods along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers in central Nepal swept away entire villages. Houses, fields and livelihoods disappeared under mud and rubble.

According to the UN World Food Programme report of 17 September 2026, more than 1,400 people lost their lives; more than 6,000 are still missing. Some affected areas are hard to reach: roads have been washed away, and debris fields block the routes.

AMURT (Ananda Marga Universal Relief Team) and AMURTEL (Ananda Marga Universal Relief Team Ladies) are providing emergency relief there. After an initial needs assessment, the teams mobilised sixteen tonnes of food and urgently needed supplies for hard-hit communities. You can find current information on the AMURTEL website and at AMURT.

Help under extreme conditions

The path to the people who need help most urgently leads over rubble, destroyed roads and debris fields. A journey of about forty-five kilometres took fifteen hours. Landslides had to be cleared again and again; vehicles got stuck. Still the teams got through.

One especially difficult mission was for Nilakantha High School. More than seventeen hundred children and adults found shelter there.

Two hundred of these children come from a village that the flood completely washed away. They survived because they were at school. Many have lost one or both parents.

The headteacher reported that supplies would last only three more days. Many children had been wearing the same clothes for days because they had lost everything.

The team delivered food, clothing, hygiene items, menstrual products and cooking utensils — exactly what the people in the school needed immediately.

Distribution and supply on the ground

AMURT and AMURTEL work with partner organisations. They bring food, water and basic necessities to places where houses and infrastructure have been destroyed. In warehouses, sacks are sorted and loaded onto trucks. On site, packages and drinking water reach families who often own nothing anymore.

The need remains great: food, clean water, shelter, medical care and psychosocial support for children and other especially vulnerable people. Entire villages are destroyed. Rebuilding homes, schools and livelihoods will take a long time. The teams adapt their response to changing needs.
